The symmetric top-hat DIN rail made industrial components snap on

Germany's 1928 DIN rail, standardized as a symmetric 35mm top-hat profile, beat asymmetric rails because any component from any maker could snap onto it.

Electrical control cabinets used to be built by mounting each device with screws. The original rail idea came from Germany in 1928, with a G-shaped profile that gave a strong mechanical connection but limited how a component could be fitted. Later, in the 1950s, manufacturers standardized a 'top-hat' profile.

The genius was symmetry. The top-hat rail is a symmetric profile, so equipment can be mounted from either direction, removing installation errors and simplifying training. As an asymmetric alternative, the G-section is still reserved for heavy-duty, high-power parts and requires a specific orientation.

The rail's 35mm width became the universal size because it fits most industrial electrical components while keeping panels compact. More importantly, the modular 18mm width unit means a small part costs one module (18mm), a larger part four (72mm), so planners can calculate a panel's layout without guesswork.

Standardized as EN 50022 (top-hat rails 35mm wide for snap-on mounting) and IEC 60715, it spread worldwide. Instead of fixing each component individually, an installer pushes it onto the rail and it clicks — dramatically faster assembly, maintenance and reconfiguration.

The top-hat 35mm DIN rail became the global standard for mounting breaker, control and automation equipment, with EN 50022 and IEC 60715 codifying it and national equivalents like DIN 46277-3 following. It expanded into building management, data centers and IoT devices, and continues to be the default infrastructure for everything from smart-building controls to network equipment — an 1928 German idea that quietly standardized the world's electrical panels.
