Environmental and pro-social behavior programs almost always ask participants to log what they did: track your steps, report your recycling, confirm you took public transit. That extra step of self-reporting is friction, and friction is where most participation drops off, whatever the underlying incentive on offer.
Alipay, China's dominant mobile payment platform, already recorded exactly the kind of everyday transactions that constitute low-carbon behavior — paying a utility bill online instead of in person, buying a public transit card through the app, booking a hospital appointment online instead of driving to queue in person — without ever asking a user to report anything as an environmental act.

Ant Group pledged ¥4.18 billion to the underlying tree-planting program over eight years, of which roughly ¥630 million was paid out as direct labor income to the rural workers who did the actual planting, alongside more than 4.2 million labor-day opportunities created in those communities.

The mechanism depends on the platform actually having existing transaction or usage data that reliably correlates with the target behavior — a program trying to reward a behavior with no corresponding data trail already flowing through some system it controls would have nothing to convert automatically and would be forced back toward self-reporting. And the social, competitive layer that drove sustained engagement here depends on the underlying reward being something people want to show off or compete over; a less socially legible reward metric might retain the frictionless tracking advantage but lose the habitual engagement that made Ant Forest a daily habit rather than a passive background process users eventually stopped checking.
