Integer programming schedules Chile's soccer leagues, adding about $59 million in value.

Since 2005 the ANFP has used integer programming to set fixtures, cutting team travel, boosting TV and ticket revenue, and scheduling World Cup qualifiers.

For 12 years the Chilean Professional Soccer Association (ANFP) has scheduled its leagues with integer-programming models that decide which matches are played each round under operational, economic and sporting constraints.

The approach replaced hand-built fixtures with fairer, transparent schedules: teams got balanced home-and-away patterns, travel costs fell, and broadcaster and ticket revenue rose.

The ANFP estimates direct economic impact of about $59 million across more than 50 tournaments, including TV operating-cost cuts, subscriber growth, ticket gains and lower team travel. INFORMS named the work a 2016 Edelman finalist.
