A pill that couldn't describe itself was sold as blue goods, where 'long-lasting' is legal

China bans prescription-drug ads; Viagra's efficacy claims and its topic are taboo, leaving no legal canvas
背景
In China, strict law completely bans mass-market promotion of prescription medicines; for Viagra it is stricter still because male sexual-health is a socially sensitive subject few are comfortable discussing publicly. A competent marketer was left with no addressable channel and no words.
The conventional response was to soften the message or push a generic lifestyle idea and hope the brand sold on memory. But even a softened spot still carried a product claim, which remained illegal, and a lifestyle spot carried no Viagra identity at all.
换别人会怎么做
Every normal move in a banned category loses here. Softening the claim still leaves a product message, which stays illegal. Dropping to pure brand-lifestyle implies no Viagra identity, so nothing travels. Literal digitisation or covert pushes court a regulator. Social campaigns gesture at the taboo but sell nothing and say no safety-testable thing.

The same phrase is banned on a Viagra ad yet lawful on hair wax. Regulations govern claims, not signifiers: a trademark registration on blue ordinary goods carried the meaning with no claim the law could touch
那一手
Ogilvy pulled Viagra's trademark out of the drug category entirely, registering it across 16 ordinary non-medical consumer goods — hair wax, portable power banks, car jacks, bicycle helmets — all painted Viagra's cobalt blue and sold on official e-commerce. Because none of these is a medicine, words like 'sturdy, long-lasting, strong support, stable performance' — forbidden on any Viagra ad — were fully legal. The cobalt-blue signifier let viewers supply the real meaning themselves.
为什么管用
The ban regulates statements about a drug, and statements only exist if the brand utters them. By registering the trademark on non-medical goods, the copywriters write about hair wax — fully protected speech — while the cobalt-blue skin does the semantic work. Consumers map 'long-lasting support, durable, strong' onto Viagra because the blue object is the shared handle; the harder the category prohibition, the more the audience is primed to complete the meaning themselves, and each object becomes a small owned-media surface that no ad-budget or media-plan can be blocked. Because the asset is a trademark registration and a colour, it is legal, defensible, and repeatable across SKUs.

什么时候会失灵
It depends on the audience already knowing the brand's true function, so it fails for a brand with no pre-existing signifier or meaning. It needs a colour/signifier that is uniquely and legally uncopyable; a generic shape invites copy. It fails where the ordinary-product line feels mockingly unrelated (a sex drug as cookware), and where regulators treat brand colour as a surrogate product claim — if the blue itself is ruled a drug message, the whole scaffold collapses.
后来呢
Too recent to know its durable life, but the mechanism gives regulated brands a reusable template: the signifier that cannot be touched by regulation becomes the asset that carries everything else.
