背景
Wind turbine service contracts traditionally guarantee mechanical availability — the percentage of time the turbine is technically capable of running. But a wind farm owner doesn't actually care about mechanical availability; they care about electricity generated and sold, and the two can diverge sharply, because a service provider under a purely time-based guarantee has little incentive to identify or fix an underperforming turbine that is technically 'available' but producing less power than it should.
Worse, a time-based guarantee can be satisfied strategically: scheduling maintenance downtime during low-wind periods costs the guarantee almost nothing, since the turbine wouldn't have generated much power then anyway, while genuinely improving output during high-wind periods requires real engineering effort the contract doesn't reward.

An energy-based guarantee only pays off for Vestas if the turbines are actually generating power when the wind is available, which forces maintenance to be scheduled around real production windows rather than convenient gaps, and rewards Vestas for catching and fixing underperforming turbines that a time-based contract would have quietly ignored. The two guarantees can require identical mechanical reliability and still produce very different behavior, because only one of them pays for the thing the customer is actually buying.
