Texas Instruments halved a radio's transistor count to fit a pocket, launching an industry

背景
By 1954, transistors were a proven but expensive technology confined to military and industrial electronics, where designs used as many transistors as a circuit needed without much concern for unit cost. Texas Instruments executive Patrick Haggerty wanted a consumer product that could justify building transistors at high volume, and partnered with a small Indianapolis engineering firm, Industrial Development Engineering Associates (IDEA), to design a radio simple enough to be affordable and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket, built entirely from Texas Instruments' new germanium transistors instead of vacuum tubes.
The initial engineering prototype for the radio used eight transistors, following standard radio-circuit practice of the day. IDEA's engineer Richard Koch instead redesigned the circuit to work with half that number, cutting it to four transistors — reducing not just the parts cost but the physical volume the radio needed, since eliminating both the tubes and half its transistor count let the whole device shrink to pocket size.

It also depends on a market existing for the resulting product at its price point, since the TR-1 itself was a modest commercial seller compared to what followed it.
