Tata designed a car backward from its price tag — and the price became the whole story

Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata set an unusual engineering constraint in the early 2000s: design a genuinely safe, real four-wheel car that could sell for 100,000 rupees, roughly $2,000, targeting the tens of millions of Indian families who owned a motorcycle or scooter but had never been able to afford a car. Rather than start from an existing platform and cut cost, Tata's engineers treated the price as fixed from day one and reverse-engineered every component — materials, parts count, manufacturing process — to hit it.
The Nano launched in 2008 as the world's cheapest car, and the engineering achievement was real: a functioning, road-legal automobile built to a price point competitors considered impossible. But the price that made the car famous also became the only thing the market understood about it.
