They didn't build an app for blind pedestrians — they put the information in the one surface a cane already touches

Solving an accessibility problem by building a new app or device assumes the affected person will adopt, carry, charge and operate a new piece of technology, when the more reliable channel might be something they're already touching, every step, with no adoption required at all
背景
Roughly half a million visually impaired people in Peru navigate city streets with a cane as their primary tool, but had no reliable way to identify what kind of business or service sat behind any given storefront without stopping to ask a stranger, or relying on a smartphone app that assumed data access, dexterity and battery life the person might not have in the moment. Every accessibility solution built to solve this problem for decades had defaulted to adding a new device or digital layer on top of the city — audio beacons, apps, sensors — each one another thing to obtain, charge, and remember to bring.
Peruvian cement brand Cemento Sol and ad agency Circus Grey inverted the approach: instead of adding a device to the person, they treated the sidewalk itself — the one surface every cane-user in the city was already in constant physical contact with — as the information interface. New paving tiles installed at business entrances in the Miraflores district were cast with a distinct pattern of raised horizontal lines: two lines for a bank, three for a grocery store, four for a pharmacy, with vertical markers indicating which side of the street the entrance sat on.

Every accessibility solution built to solve this problem for decades had defaulted to adding a new device or digital layer on top of the city, audio beacons, apps, sensors, requiring a visually impaired pedestrian to obtain, charge, learn and remember to carry a separate piece of technology just to identify a nearby storefront.

A visually impaired pedestrian sweeping a cane across a SightWalks tile feels the coded bump pattern directly through the cane tip, reading the category and position of the nearest business without a phone, an app, a signal, a battery, or any device beyond the cane they were already using to navigate. The tile system was co-designed with associations for the visually impaired in Peru, and Cemento Sol released the design and installation method as an open, free-to-use patent rather than a proprietary product.

Encoding business category and street-side position directly into a distinct tactile pattern on paving tiles meant a visually impaired pedestrian could read the information through the exact tool, a cane, they were already using to navigate, with no phone, app, signal, battery or separate device involved anywhere in the interaction. Because the fix lived in a permanent physical surface rather than a digital layer requiring upkeep, the tiles continued functioning with zero ongoing cost or maintenance after installation, letting a one-time infrastructure investment reach an estimated 500,000 visually impaired people across more than 75,000 square meters of Miraflores streets indefinitely, a reach and durability no app requiring individual adoption, charging and updates could match at comparable cost. Releasing the design as an open, patent-free method rather than a proprietary product also meant any other city could adopt the same approach without licensing cost, extending the fix's potential reach well beyond the original installation.

The tactile tiles were installed across more than 75,000 square meters of Miraflores streets, reaching an estimated 500,000 visually impaired people in Peru, and — unlike a marketing campaign that ends when the media buy does — the physical tiles remain embedded in the sidewalk permanently, continuing to function with zero ongoing cost or maintenance requirement after installation. SightWalks won the Design Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, alongside four Gold, two Silver and one Bronze Lion.
什么时候会失灵
The mechanism depends on the target user genuinely having a reliable, consistent physical point of contact with the environment to encode information into, a cane on pavement worked here specifically because nearly every visually impaired pedestrian already used one; a population without an equivalent shared physical touchpoint would have no analogous surface to embed information into. It also depends on the coded information being learnable and memorable enough that users can reliably interpret it without external reference, a scheme with too many categories or an overly complex pattern language would exceed what users could realistically memorize and recall through touch alone in the moment. And because the information is physically fixed into permanent infrastructure, it can't be updated or corrected as easily as a digital system once installed, meaning a business that changes category or relocates would leave the tactile marker inaccurate until someone physically replaces the tile, a tradeoff for durability and zero-maintenance operation that a software-based system wouldn't face in the same way.

SightWalks is cited in design and advertising trade coverage as a model for accessibility infrastructure that embeds information directly into existing physical touchpoints rather than adding a digital layer, and its open, patent-free design has been made available for other cities to adopt without licensing cost.
