Tokyo Housewives Order First, Harvest Later

问题

Consumers couldn't get safe food at fair prices; small producers couldn't plan or get fair pay through middlemen.

背景

In 1965 a single Tokyo housewife organized 200 women to buy 300 bottles of milk jointly and push the price down, the founding act of the Seikatsu Club. It was incorporated in 1968 as the Seikatsu Club Consumers' Cooperative under the motto 'autonomous control of our lives'.

The cooperative grew into 33 affiliated Seikatsu Clubs across 21 Japanese prefectures. Members decide the specifications of food and consumer goods together with producers and buy by pre-order; the Right Livelihood Award profile, which honored the club in 1989, notes that consumers regularly visit farmers to observe production methods and lend a hand, keeping the producer relationship direct.

换别人会怎么做

Open a store and compete on price, or negotiate harder with the middlemen.

他们看到了什么

Put the order before the harvest: aggregate committed demand first, then contract producers to exact specifications. Inventory risk disappears, producers can plan, and members get the safety and price the shelf.

那一手

Orders come first and production follows. Members commit in advance to a fixed basket of goods whose specifications they set jointly with producers; the club aggregates the pre-orders and contracts production directly. Because demand is known before anything is grown or made, producers can plan and guarantee freshness, and the co-op carries no speculative inventory. Price is negotiated through specifications and commitment rather than shelf competition.

为什么管用

Pre-order converts demand uncertainty into a planning asset; joint specification gives producers a guaranteed outlet in exchange for transparency; direct farm visits keep trust human rather than contractual.

值了多少

From 200 housewives and 300 bottles of milk in 1965 to 33 affiliated cooperatives across 21 prefectures (Right Livelihood profile).

什么时候会失灵

It fails where member commitment wavers, since a pre-order system with cancellations is just a slow supermarket; it limits choice to the agreed basket; and it depends on continuous organizing labor, which is management-intensive.

后来呢

A long-running demonstration that a consumer organization can operate demand-first food supply chains at scale, cited in the cooperative and social-economy literature.
