背景
Nairobi's informal settlements house hundreds of thousands of people with no sewer network and no feasible way to build one — the density, land tenure and cost rule out conventional pipes. Pit latrines fill and contaminate; 'flying toilets' (bagged waste thrown away) spread disease. Charities build toilets that then rot for lack of an operating budget, because a slum toilet, by itself, produces nothing but a maintenance liability. The economics of sanitation simply don't close where sewers can't go.
Sanergy, from 2011, looked at the same waste stream and saw an input. If you collect the waste before it leaks into the environment and process it centrally, human and organic waste becomes valuable agricultural products — and that revenue is what can make the whole sanitation chain self-sustaining.

Build more free or donor-funded toilets, or wait for the city to extend sewers. Free toilets rot without an operating budget, and sewers are physically and financially impossible in dense informal settlements — so the sanitation gap persists, treated as a charity problem rather than a business with a product to sell.

Sanergy runs a full container-based sanitation chain in place of a sewer: prefabricated urine-diverting Fresh Life Toilets sold via a franchise to local operators (Fresh Life Operators, who earn by charging users), a professional service that regularly swaps out the sealed waste cartridges and hauls them to a central plant, and — the economic engine — a treatment facility (Regen Organics) that converts the collected waste into organic fertilizer, insect-based animal-feed protein and biomass briquettes. Selling those products funds the collection that keeps the neighborhood clean, so sanitation pays for itself through what it produces rather than depending on user fees or donations alone. The network grew to 6,000+ toilets serving 250,000+ people daily, removing ~12,000 tonnes of waste a year and supplying fertilizer to ~10,000 farmers reporting ~30% yield gains.

Monetizing the waste stream closes the economic loop that defeats conventional sanitation: revenue from fertilizer, protein and briquettes funds the collection service, so the system doesn't depend solely on fees the poor can barely pay or donations that run out. Container-based collection sidesteps the impossible sewer entirely, and the franchise model turns local operators into motivated owners who keep toilets clean because their income depends on it. Each piece reinforces the others — clean toilets attract users, users generate waste, waste generates products, products fund collection — a circular chain where the 'problem' (waste) is the very thing that makes it viable.

The economics hinge on the waste products actually selling at scale — soft fertilizer or feed markets, or high processing/logistics costs, can leave the loop unclosed and reliant on subsidy (a real pressure for container-based sanitation). It needs density to make collection routes efficient, reliable operations to keep the cartridge-swap chain hygienic, and regulatory acceptance of human-waste-derived agricultural inputs; any weak link and the 'self-funding' promise reverts to a cost.

A leading proof of container-based sanitation and the sanitation circular economy — franchise toilets plus waste-to-value processing became a template for serving dense, sewer-less settlements worldwide.
