Facing invasion, Poland handed Britain and France an Enigma edge years ahead of their work

问题

Poland had broken Enigma years earlier but couldn't keep pace with German upgrades or defend the lead alone

背景

Through the 1930s, Polish military mathematicians led by Marian Rejewski had reconstructed the German Enigma machine's wiring and built working decryption methods, including the electromechanical 'bomba' device, giving Poland a working method for reading Enigma traffic years before British or French cryptanalysts had made comparable progress. But by mid-1939, German operators were adding rotors and complicating procedures faster than Poland's under-resourced Cipher Bureau could keep up with alone, and with a German invasion increasingly imminent, Poland faced the prospect of losing both the intelligence advantage and the people who held it.

The conventional instinct for an intelligence service holding a unique advantage is to guard it as long as possible, sharing nothing until forced to by circumstance or alliance obligation, since revealing methods risks losing whatever edge remains. Poland instead had to weigh that instinct against a starker fact: whatever advantage it kept secret would very likely disappear entirely the moment the Wehrmacht crossed the border.

换别人会怎么做

An intelligence service holding a rare technical advantage would normally keep it as secret as possible for as long as possible, sharing only what alliance obligations strictly required, on the assumption that any advantage revealed is an advantage partly lost.

他们看到了什么

Poland saw its edge's real deadline wasn't a rival catching up — it was invasion within weeks. An edge unusable past that deadline is worth more transferred now than lost for nothing.

那一手

On 25–26 July 1939, at a secluded meeting point in the Pyry Forest outside Warsaw, Polish cryptologists gave visiting British and French intelligence representatives reconstructed Enigma machines, full documentation of the mathematical methods used to break its ciphers, and the bomba's design — handing over years of head start rather than trying to extract it themselves in the weeks Poland had left.

为什么管用

Britain and France already desperately wanted to break Enigma and had every incentive to act on what Poland gave them the moment they had it, so no persuasion was required — only the decision to hand over the head start rather than let it evaporate with the country's fall. Because the advantage was purely informational (mathematics, machine designs, documented methods), it could be transferred completely and instantly, unlike physical assets that degrade or can't be duplicated; Poland lost nothing by giving Britain a copy of knowledge it was about to lose the ability to use anyway.

值了多少

British codebreakers, still behind Poland's progress, left the July 1939 meeting with methods historians credit with saving crucial years.

什么时候会失灵

This only makes sense when the giving party is genuinely about to lose the ability to exploit its own advantage — handing a live edge to an ally prematurely, while you could still act on it yourself, forfeits value for nothing. It also requires trusting the receiving party to actually be capable of using and building on what's transferred, and willing to act on it fast enough to matter; an advantage handed to an ally who sits on it accomplishes nothing beyond keeping it out of the enemy's hands.

后来呢

GCHQ's own official history describes the Pyry meeting as transforming British cryptanalysis of Enigma virtually overnight, and Alan Turing's subsequent work with Polish mathematician Rejewski in Paris in January 1940 built directly on what Poland handed over rather than starting British efforts from first principles.
