By the late 1940s, recreational skis were still made from bent and laminated wood -- typically hickory -- the same basic craft that had shaped skis for decades. They were heavy, warped unevenly with humidity and wear, and behaved inconsistently underfoot because no two pieces of natural wood flex identically. Howard Head was not a ski maker.
