背景

Product design normally runs forward: engineers select materials and fasteners for cost, strength and manufacturability, the product ships, and only years or decades later, at disposal, does anyone confront how it was actually put together — by which point bonded composites, mixed plastics and hidden adhesives usually make clean recycling impossible, and the product simply becomes landfill. Herman Miller, an office furniture maker, partnered with architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart in the late 1990s to build a formal 'Design for Environment' assessment process based on their cradle-to-cradle philosophy, which held that a product's end-of-life fate should be a design requirement, not an afterthought discovered after the fact.

The conventional response to furniture waste was end-of-pipe: run take-back programs, encourage recycling centers to sort mixed-material products as best they could, or ask customers to dispose of old furniture responsibly — all fixes applied after a product had already been designed without disassembly in mind. Herman Miller instead applied the new assessment process to a chair being designed from a blank sheet, the Mirra, and let the requirement of eventual disassembly shape decisions made at the very start of the design process.
