The Deal Exists Only If Enough People Buy It

问题

Local merchants would not risk discounts without guaranteed volume; individuals could not move a business alone.

背景

Groupon's S-1 founder letter traces the mechanism to The Point, a website launched in November 2007 as a social action platform letting anyone organize a campaign asking others to give money or take action as a group, but only once a tipping point of participation is reached.

The company began operations in 2008, applying The Point's threshold technology to group buying; by January 2009 it had fully shifted its attention to Groupon as popularity soared.

换别人会怎么做

Negotiate discounts with merchants and advertise them individually.

他们看到了什么

A discount is a risk; a threshold is a contract. Making the deal conditional turns buyers into recruiters — the crowd assembles the demand the merchant was never brave enough to discount for.

那一手

The conditional deal aggregates demand before the discount is granted: a voucher activates only when a minimum number of buyers commit, so the merchant trades a known discount for guaranteed volume — and buyers recruit buyers, because the deal dies without them. Risk transfers from the merchant's margin to the crowd's threshold, and the recruiting mechanic makes every customer part of the sales force.

为什么管用

Buyers spread the deal to tip it; merchants get guaranteed minimums; the deadline plus threshold creates urgency on both sides; and the platform takes its margin only on completed, pre-paid volume.

值了多少

From a 2008 start, daily-deal group buying scaled to an IPO-scale business by 2011 (SEC S-1).

什么时候会失灵

It fails when merchants can't honor the surge (capacity crush), when deal-seekers never return at full price, when the novelty fades and thresholds start missing — and the model has no lock on either side, so clones harvested the same merchants.

后来呢

Made threshold-based commerce a global format and, just as quickly, a cautionary tale of merchant fatigue and clonability.
