背景
In the 1990s most of rural Bangladesh had no grid, and solar home systems that could power lights and a phone charger cost far more upfront than a poor household could pay in a lump. Two barriers, not one: affordability (the sticker price) and durability (donated or one-off systems failed within a couple of years because no local technician could maintain them, and spare parts weren't stocked). Programs kept solving one and ignoring the other, so panels either never sold or died young.
Grameen Shakti, founded in 1996 as a not-for-profit under the Grameen Bank, brought the parent's microfinance experience to energy — and paired it with a second, less obvious move about who keeps the systems running.

Subsidize or donate panels to make them affordable, and sell them at a discounted upfront price. This ignores both real barriers: a lump sum still excludes the poorest, and a panel with no local technician and no parts becomes e-waste within a couple of years — exactly the failure that littered earlier rural-energy efforts.

Grameen Shakti financed each solar home system (a 30-100W panel plus battery) on microfinance installments instead of an upfront price — and the numbers self-funded: households saved roughly Tk 400-500 (~$6-7.50) a month on kerosene, which in many cases covered the monthly loan payment, so the panel effectively paid for itself out of the fuel it replaced. The durability half was the distinctive move: Grameen Shakti built technology centres, staffed mainly by local women trained as solar technicians, to install, service and repair systems and even make accessories in-region — creating the maintenance network whose absence had killed earlier efforts, and rural jobs alongside it. It reached around 1.5 million homes (~8.4 million people) through 1,500 offices across all 64 districts.

Financing against the displaced fuel cost makes the purchase close to cash-neutral for the household — the installment lands where the kerosene money used to go — which unlocks the vast market that any upfront price excludes, while keeping the program financially sustainable rather than donation-dependent. The local women-technician network attacks the true failure mode of rural hardware (no maintenance), so systems keep working for years and the brand earns the trust that drives the next sale; it also embeds spare-parts supply and creates income locally. Solving affordability and durability together is why it scaled where single-barrier programs stalled.

什么时候会失灵
It needs a recurring cost large and reliable enough to cover the installment — where fuel spend is low or erratic, the self-funding logic weakens and repayment risk rises. Microfinance carries its own hazards (over-indebtedness, collection pressure) that a solar loan inherits, and building a trained local repair workforce is slow and management-intensive — skip it to grow faster and the durability advantage, the whole point, evaporates.

One of the world's largest off-grid solar programs and a model copied across the developing world — the pairing of microfinance affordability with a local (women-led) repair network became a template for durable rural electrification.
