Around 20 million low-birth-weight and premature babies are born each year, and staying warm is one of their deadliest problems — they lack the body fat to regulate temperature. The medical answer, the incubator, costs up to $20,000 and demands a constant electricity supply, so it sits in urban hospitals while the babies dying of cold are in rural clinics and homes with no reliable power. Donating incubators to such places had failed for decades: they break, they can't be maintained, and without power they're inert.

A Stanford student team (in the d.school's 'Design for Extreme Affordability' course) reframed the brief. The goal wasn't a cheaper incubator — it was keeping a baby at body temperature for hours in a place with no dependable electricity and no technician. That is a different, and much simpler, machine.
