背景
In the early 1960s Corning's 'Project Muscle' developed chemically strengthened glass — swapping smaller sodium ions for larger potassium ones to put the surface in compression — and marketed it as Chemcor. It was genuinely stronger and thinner than ordinary glass, and Corning aimed it at the obvious mass market: automotive windshields. Carmakers declined, preferring cheap laminated glass, and after niche sales into safety glasses and pharmaceutical vials the product never found a home. By 1971 Corning shelved it.
Crucially, Corning did not discard the science. The chemistry, the process knowledge and the patents stayed in the company's institutional memory for four decades — an invention without a market, kept rather than written off.
