Columbus got Spain to fund an unproven voyage by taking a cut, not a wage

问题

Columbus needed the Crown to fund an unproven voyage that most experts thought would fail or find nothing

背景

Columbus's proposal to reach Asia by sailing west had already been rejected by Portugal and by Spain's own royal commission, which judged his distance estimates wrong and the voyage unlikely to succeed. Funding an expedition on Columbus's own resources was impossible; he had neither ships nor capital. Asking the Crown for a flat salary to lead a voyage most experts doubted would find anything of value gave Isabella and Ferdinand every reason to say no again — why pay a fixed sum for a gamble nobody credible endorsed?

A grant with no strings attached would have been reckless for a nearly bankrupt Crown just finishing the Reconquista; a wage-for-labor contract gave Columbus no reason to actually push through hardship and mutiny once at sea rather than simply collecting pay. The Crown needed a structure that cost it almost nothing if Columbus found nothing, and Columbus needed a structure that paid him enormously if he found something.

换别人会怎么做

A fixed salary or one-time grant for leading the expedition was the obvious ask, and it was precisely what a nearly bankrupt Crown, backing a proposal its own experts had already rejected, had no reason to underwrite.

他们看到了什么

Columbus saw a wage would make the Crown pay for failure regardless of success. A percentage of what he found cost Spain almost nothing upfront and gave him every reason to actually find something.

那一手

The April 1492 Capitulations of Santa Fe gave Columbus the titles of Admiral, Viceroy and Governor-General of whatever he discovered, plus a permanent, hereditary right to one-tenth of all future profits from those lands, with the option to invest an eighth of any voyage's cost himself in exchange for an eighth of its profits.

为什么管用

A percentage-of-profit contract aligns risk instead of transferring it: the funder only pays out if the venture succeeds, so a skeptical backer risks little by saying yes, while the agent bears the cost of failure but captures outsized reward from success, giving him maximum incentive to push through hardship rather than collect a wage regardless of outcome. Making the grant hereditary extended that incentive across a lifetime and beyond it.

值了多少

The deal cost the Crown almost nothing upfront; Columbus's heirs later sued on its terms, collecting an allowance and titles until 1898.

什么时候会失灵

It only works if the payout, when it comes, is enforceable — Columbus's heirs spent decades in court fighting the Crown to actually collect on the deal, and any backer with more power than the agent can simply renegotiate or ignore the terms once the discovery is made and the agent's leverage is gone.

后来呢

The Capitulations turned exploration into an equity bet rather than a wage contract, a template European crowns and companies reused for centuries to fund colonial ventures without underwriting their risk directly.
