Citroën's brief was an umbrella on wheels that could carry eggs across a ploughed field

问题

Rural French farmers in the 1930s could not afford cars, and existing cheap cars were too fragile for unpaved roads

背景

In 1930s France, car ownership remained mostly urban and middle-class; rural farmers still relied on horses and carts because available cars were priced and engineered for paved roads, not the muddy, rutted tracks connecting farms to market towns. Citroën vice-president Pierre Boulanger set out in 1936 to close that gap, but instead of commissioning a cheaper version of an existing car, he wrote his engineering team a brief describing the vehicle almost entirely in terms of what a farmer needed it to do, not what a car conventionally had.

Boulanger's brief asked for something that could carry two farmers in work clothes and 50 kilograms of goods across a ploughed field at low speed without breaking a basket of eggs riding on the seat, using no more than 3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers — deliberately excluding speed, styling, comfort features and engine power from the specification entirely, famously summarized as 'an umbrella on four wheels.'

换别人会怎么做

The conventional route to a lower-priced car was to take an existing model and cut its trim, engine size and options — a smaller, cheaper version of the same specification sheet every other car used.

他们看到了什么

Boulanger saw specifying a car by features — horsepower, comfort — would price out a farmer, since those weren't what he needed. Specifying the job, eggs surviving a ploughed field, let engineers cut the rest.

那一手

The resulting Citroën 2CV, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1948, ran on a tiny air-cooled engine, used a long-travel interconnected suspension engineered specifically to absorb ploughed-field bumps without breaking the brief's proverbial eggs, and stripped out virtually every comfort feature — fixed headlights, a canvas roll-back roof instead of a full metal one, minimal instrumentation — to hit its weight, cost and fuel targets.

为什么管用

Defining success as 'carries two farmers and eggs across mud without breaking them' rather than as a list of conventional automotive features gave the engineering team explicit permission to remove anything — power, styling, weatherproofing beyond a canvas roof — that didn't serve that exact task. Every removed feature lowered cost and weight, which in turn made the low-power engine and cheap materials adequate rather than a compromise.

值了多少

Nearly 3.9 million 2CV sedans were built between 1948 and 1990, with a three-year waiting list within months of launch.

什么时候会失灵

It requires genuinely understanding the target customer's task well enough to write a brief around it — a task-based brief built on a wrong assumption about what the customer needs produces a product nobody wants. It also risks the finished product looking so minimal that buyers outside the original target segment reject it on image alone.

后来呢

The 2CV became a symbol of postwar French mobility and design-by-constraint, and its user-need-first brief — defining a product by what it must do for the poorest buyer rather than by conventional features — is still taught as a model design exercise.
