背景
When the campaign began in 1986, Guinea worm disease afflicted an estimated 3.5 million people every year across 21 countries in Africa and Asia. There is no medicine to treat it and no vaccine to prevent it, so prevention runs entirely through changing what people do, not through anything they take.
The Carter Center has led the international campaign for nearly 40 years, working with ministries of health and partners, deploying field supervisors and thousands of community volunteers. A CDC journal tribute to the program notes that only two diseases, smallpox and rinderpest, have ever been eradicated, and Guinea worm is poised to join them.
