背景
In the early 19th century, as railways began to make travel possible for the middle classes, the independent traveler faced two problems: too much to see and no way to tell what was worth it, and a reliance on local guides and touts whose advice was unverifiable and often self-interested. Guidebooks existed but were dense prose you had to read in full, and travelers still arrived somewhere new unsure what mattered, at the mercy of whoever offered to show them around.
Karl Baedeker, a German publisher, had been building practical guidebooks organized around routes. From 1844 he added a device that changed how people travel: a compressed, trusted quality signal printed right on the page.

Denser prose deepens the overload it was meant to cure, and paid or partnered recommendations destroy the one thing that makes a rating useful — that it's independent and therefore believable.

Combined with the route structure and practical detail (transport, lodging, prices), the trusted star freed travelers from hired local guides entirely — you could navigate a foreign city confidently with a book in hand. Baedeker became the byword for the authoritative guidebook and the ancestor of every star-rating system since.

A rating works only if it's both compressed and credible: the star saves the traveler from reading everything (attention), and independence — incognito checks, no paid endorsements — makes the star believable (trust), so together they replace the untrustworthy local guide. The signal scales where prose and human guides can't: one trusted symbol travels to every reader and every town. And credibility compounds into brand — once 'Baedeker' means reliable, the rating itself becomes the moat, which is exactly why later systems (Michelin, hotel stars) copied the form.

Compression also loses nuance: a single star flattens what some travelers would weigh differently, and ratings can homogenize demand, funneling everyone to the starred few and hollowing out everything unrated. It demands relentless, costly verification to stay trustworthy as coverage grows.
