Enterprise Software Sold With No Salespeople
问题
Enterprise software pricing assumed a quota-carrying sales force whose cost loaded every deal with human overhead.
背景
Atlassian's 2015 IPO filing states plainly: we do not have a direct salesforce and our sales model does not include traditional, quota-carrying sales personnel.
Instead the company runs a self-service, low-friction model that makes it easy for users to try, adopt and expand the products, with self-service support supplementing its customer teams.
换别人会怎么做
Hire a field sales force and sell top-down to CIOs.
他们看到了什么
Every salesperson's salary is added to the customer's price. Remove the function, price transparently low, and let the trial do the persuading — adoption spreads through organizations like a tool, not a mandate.
那一手
Delete the sales function and let the product do the selling: low transparent prices, downloadable trials, and adoption that spreads team by team. The economics invert — instead of expensive field reps converting a few big accounts, thousands of small teams convert themselves, and expansion revenue arrives as seats grow inside existing customers. Money not spent on salespeople is money spent on product.
为什么管用
Developers and teams evaluate tools themselves; low friction converts them without persuasion; expansion is organic as colleagues see the tool in use; and support-led service replaces relationship-led selling at a fraction of the cost.
值了多少
Scaled to a public company on a model the filing describes as sustainable without traditional sales personnel (SEC F-1).
什么时候会失灵
It fails for products that need configuration, customization or executive sponsorship to sell; at the top of market where procurement expects humans; and as the company itself grew, it reintroduced enterprise sellers — the model scales best before the enterprise tier does.
后来呢
Proved bottom-up, self-serve enterprise software at IPO scale, paving the way for PLG (product-led growth) as a category strategy.
