背景
Through the 1920s American seed companies routinely marketed new flower and vegetable varieties as breakthroughs, but a gardener had no way to verify a breeder's claim before committing a growing season and a plot of land to a variety that might perform no better than what was already on the shelf.
W. Ray Hastings, president of the Southern Seedsmen's Association, proposed a solution the industry itself would fund but not control: a nonprofit, All-America Selections, running new varieties through a national network of trial gardens judged by horticulturists with no stake in whose seed won.
