Airbnb stopped showing either side's review until both had already written theirs

问题

Hosts and guests inflated reviews out of fear of retaliation, so ratings stopped telling anyone the truth

背景

Under Airbnb's original review system, a host's review of a guest was published the moment it was submitted, and the guest could then read it before deciding what to write about the host. That ordering created an obvious incentive: publish something positive first to encourage reciprocity, or hold back honest criticism because the other party could still retaliate with a bad review of their own once they saw yours. The result was reviews that clustered overwhelmingly at five stars regardless of the actual experience, which defeated the entire purpose of a review system a two-sided marketplace depends on to let strangers trust each other.

Simply asking users to be more honest could not fix this, because the incentive to hedge or retaliate was structural — it existed as long as either party could see the other's review before finishing their own. Airbnb needed to remove the sequencing itself, not the people's willingness to be candid.

换别人会怎么做

The instinct was to appeal to users directly — encourage honesty, warn against retaliation in the guidelines, or let the platform quietly moderate suspiciously vindictive reviews after the fact — all of which left the sequential reveal in place and therefore left the retaliation incentive fully intact for every review written under it.

The dishonesty wasn't a trust problem, it was a timing problem. As long as one party could see the other's verdict first, every review was a negotiation. Remove that visibility, and the negotiation collapses.

那一手

In 2014 Airbnb switched to a simultaneous, double-blind release: both the host's review of the guest and the guest's review of the listing are written independently, and neither is shown to anyone — including the other party — until both have submitted theirs, or 14 days have passed, at which point both publish at once.

为什么管用

Simultaneous release converts the review into what game theorists would call a sealed-bid move: since neither party can condition their review on what the other wrote, the only rational strategy is to report what actually happened, because there is no strategic advantage left to gain from hedging. No policy, moderation team or honesty pledge is required — the incentive to lie is removed by construction the moment visibility is delayed for both sides equally.

值了多少

Users reported writing noticeably more candid reviews right after the change, since neither side could react to what the other had posted.

什么时候会失灵

It only neutralizes retaliation that depends on seeing the other review first; a user who anticipates a bad experience can still preemptively write something dishonestly negative or positive regardless of sequencing, and repeat relationships between the same two parties across multiple future transactions can reintroduce retaliation risk that a single-transaction blind reveal cannot reach.

后来呢

The double-blind, simultaneous-reveal review model became a standard design pattern across two-sided marketplaces, adopted in variations by other platforms seeking honest peer feedback without retaliation risk.
