Airbnb built a one-click bridge onto Craigslist's huge audience without permission
问题
Airbnb had almost no listings or guests and no budget to build both sides of its marketplace
背景
In 2010 Airbnb was a small startup facing the classic marketplace chicken-and-egg problem: too few listings meant guests wouldn't come, and too few guests meant hosts wouldn't bother listing. Craigslist already had the exact audience Airbnb needed - tens of millions of people posting and browsing short-term room listings every month - but offered no public API and no sanctioned way for a third party to plug into it.
Buying ads to build both sides of the marketplace independently would have cost far more than the startup could afford and taken years to approach Craigslist's scale organically. Airbnb needed to reach Craigslist's existing users directly, using Craigslist's own reach, without Craigslist's cooperation.
换别人会怎么做
Spend on paid acquisition or content marketing to build both host and guest supply organically - both require capital and years to approach the scale a single incumbent classifieds site already had.

Airbnb saw acquisition needn't start from zero if a rival's own users could be routed over with one click - Craigslist's traffic was a resource Airbnb could tap without consent by mimicking a human posting.
那一手
Airbnb's engineers reverse-engineered Craigslist's posting flow, with no public API to work from, then built a tool letting any Airbnb host cross-post their listing to Craigslist in one click - quietly routing a slice of Craigslist's own enormous traffic straight into Airbnb's marketplace for every new listing.
为什么管用
The tool cost Airbnb almost nothing to run per listing while Craigslist's own scale did the audience-generation work. Because it looked like normal user activity, it ran for months before detection, converting free traffic into signups at zero marginal acquisition cost.

The funnel became one of Airbnb's biggest growth channels through 2010-2011, priming liquidity before Craigslist closed the loophole.
什么时候会失灵
It depends on the target platform lacking defenses against scraping and automation, fails the moment the pattern is detected and blocked, as Craigslist eventually did, and exposes the smaller company to terms-of-service and legal risk if the host platform chooses to enforce.
后来呢
The tactic became one of the most cited case studies in Silicon Valley 'growth hacking,' documented in Leigh Gallagher's history of the company, and set a pattern - unauthorized platform integration to bootstrap a two-sided marketplace - that later startups tried to replicate, though platforms since have hardened against exactly this kind of scraping.
