背景
After a costly siege and a grueling retreat toward Calais, Henry V's English army - reduced by dysentery and exhaustion to perhaps 6,000-9,000 men, mostly lightly armored longbowmen - found its path blocked near Agincourt by a fresh French force of heavily armored knights numbering, by most estimates, two to four times as many. Meeting them on open, favorable ground would let French cavalry maneuver freely and simply overwhelm the smaller English line.
Retreating further risked being run down from behind by French cavalry, and Henry had neither the numbers nor the supplies to wait the French out. He needed a way to fight that neutralized the French army's central advantages, its numbers and heavy cavalry, without adding a single soldier to his own side.
