In 1968, 3M chemist Spencer Silver was trying to build a super-strong adhesive for the aerospace industry and instead produced the opposite: a glue made of tiny acrylate microspheres that stuck to surfaces but peeled away cleanly, leaving no residue and no permanent bond. By any normal R&D standard the project had failed — 3M didn't sell weak glue, and no product brief had ever asked for one. Silver patented it anyway in 1972 and spent five years, from 1968 through 1973, giving internal seminars and pitching product managers across the company, trying to find anyone with a problem his solution could solve.

Every pitch met the same answer: nobody could name a use for an adhesive designed to fail at the one thing adhesives are for. The standard move at that point is to let the patent expire quietly and move the chemist onto a project with an actual market brief. Silver kept promoting it instead, betting that the right problem existed somewhere in the company and would eventually recognize the solution, even though he had no way to search for it directly.

He coated the edge of paper slips with it, and the office notes that became Post-it Notes were the accidental second use his colleagues found almost immediately after.

Because Fry's bookmark problem was itself trivial and personal, it was exactly the kind of small, unarticulated need that a company-wide search would never have surfaced by asking customers what they wanted; it only surfaced because the solution went looking.
