The solution
Going into Australia's 2022 allergy season, Telfast had a problem: in a commoditised antihistamine category where mental availability decides sales, rival Zyrtec consistently outspent it. The stated goal was #1 market share from September to December — winnable, the team reasoned, only by outsmarting rather than outspending.
The insight: allergy sufferers don't think about antihistamines most of the time, but the moment symptoms strike they want relief immediately. Targeting those moments had been impossible — pollen counts publish only in real time and Australia has very few counting stations, so no off-the-shelf data set existed for activation. Agency Foundation built a bespoke predictive model combining location, weather, wind and topography, connected to an API inside DV360.
The trigger switched high-impact display and video on and off across 12 eastern-seaboard regions, running seven hours ahead of forecast pollen peaks to beat DSP latency. Around it sat the rest of the arsenal: Criteo purchase data at Chemist Warehouse (a category first), Flybuys and Cartology supermarket data, and Telfast first-party cashback data for buyer lookalikes.
Telfast finished the season #1 by both volume and value, growing at 1.5x the market, with awareness at 87% and consideration at 77% — ahead of Zyrtec on both measures despite 20% less spend, and no other significant changes in promotion, distribution or competitor activity.
Why it worked
Forecasting beats reacting: because pollen data was real-time only, predicting it from weather signals created an activation window nobody else had.
The seven-hour lead offsets DSP latency, so impressions land in the exact hours symptoms peak.
Concentrating a small budget into high-symptom hours beats spreading it evenly across a season — spend efficiency substitutes for spend volume.
Purchase-data targeting (Criteo at Chemist Warehouse, Flybuys, Cartology) catches antihistamine buyers at every channel, not just the ones the brand prefers.
What can be applied
When you're outgunned on budget, buy timing instead of tonnage: predict the demand moment nobody can target and concentrate every dollar there.
Aftermath
Telfast won the 2022 season as the #1 antihistamine by volume and value with record brand metrics, and Foundation and Sanofi took the Healthcare and Pharma category at The Drum Awards for Digital Advertising, announced December 2023. The case claims no other allergy brand has replicated the trigger in Australia.
