The solution
A Rest of World profile follows Sam Chitsama, 33, a keyboard player and dancer from Mozambique serving South Africa's 400,000-strong Mozambican diaspora. Most of his business is 'gossip songs': clients — jilted wives out to shame their husbands' mistresses, neighbours naming a cattle thief, siblings disputing an inheritance — pay $40 (600 rands) to have their story recorded, mixed and broadcast via WhatsApp. 'If paid,' he says, 'I sing of your private family feuds to the public on WhatsApp.'
He sings mostly in Ndau, peppered with Portuguese and isiZulu, over a prerecorded dance-pop beat in the 1990s Shangaan disco style: 'The beat stays the same, just the lyrics and client names change. It's super easy.' Using WhatsApp he acts as songwriter, publisher and record label at once, and charges an optional $60 'booster' fee every three months to re-share a client's song to his fans across South Africa and thousands back home in Mozambique.
The demand side is a justice gap: a UNDP-supported study found the majority of Mozambique's population lacks access to law courts and around 40% of districts have no formal court at all, leaving disputes to traditional chiefs' courts with uneven outcomes. Chitsama doesn't fact-check lyrics or hide names, unless children are involved — 'the paid-for WhatsApp audio belongs to the customer' — and argues the audience is the client's protection: 'If I belt out a track about a powerful villager who stole your cow, they're unlikely to assault you.'
Why it worked
A tight-knit cross-border diaspora means one WhatsApp broadcast reaches everyone who matters.
Pre-made beats turn custom songs into a fast, cheap product.
Publicity is the sanction and the client's shield at the same time.
No court access created a market that music could serve.
What can be applied
Where formal institutions fail, status technologies fill the gap: a broadcast that makes a grievance public is both the sanction and the client's bodyguard.
Aftermath
Dozens of singers now run the same trade in mining towns like Springs and Welkom and in Soweto, providing wronged parties an outlet where civil proceedings offer none.
