Whistler Blackcomb's route maths lifted Mega Day finishers 67%

Whistler Blackcomb's Mega Day challenge asks skiers to ride all 24 lifts in a single day. Of the more than two million people who ski there annually, only 313 completed it in the 14 months after the resort introduced RFID tracking, about 0.1%.
The real difficulty was route choice: lift opening and closing times vary, and a route that works for an expert is impossible for a slower skier. Using RFID data, researchers estimated ski times between lifts by ability and solved a combined integer-programming and heuristic model to find minimum-time routes.
The results showed the badge is achievable by the top quartile of skiers, with a concrete benchmark: anyone who can ski a common run in 12 minutes or less can do it. In the three months after the recommended route was communicated, the completion rate rose by two-thirds, 67%, over the previous seven months.
