SanDisk, Toshiba and Panasonic joined forces to make SD the card standard

Three rivals co-wrote a single stamp-sized card and opened the SD Association, turning a fragmented flash-card market into one dominant format.

SanDisk · Toshiba · Panasonic (Matsushita)

那一手

By the late 1990s digital cameras and MP3 players needed removable storage, but the market was fragmented: Sony pushed its proprietary Memory Stick, Olympus and Fujifilm pushed xD-Picture Card, and CompactFlash and SmartMedia each had their own camps. For makers of cards and devices this splintering limited the whole market's growth.

SanDisk, Toshiba and Panasonic (then Matsushita) decided to solve fragmentation by agreeing on a single standard among themselves. They launched Secure Digital in 1999, largely using an existing MMC design for the controller, and created the SD Association in 2000 to publish the spec and ensure compatibility across devices and card manufacturers.

The physical choice made it easy to love: at 32 x 24 x 2.1mm the SD card was postage-stamp small, smaller than CompactFlash, yet initially offered 8MB to 64MB — more capacity than the rivals of the day. Early bus speed was 12.5MB/s, later doubled to 25MB/s, and the same small shell scaled down into miniSD and microSD.

By opening the standard through the association, the three founders did not corner the market; they grew it. SD became the dominant removable flash format, and the fragmented card war that had held the market back collapsed into one vocabulary.

为什么管用

  • Rival formats fragmented demand and throttled the whole category
  • A single association-published spec made any card work in any compliant device
  • The tiny 32x24mm footprint fit phones and cameras that CompactFlash could not
  • Higher capacity than the alternatives gave users a reason to switch
  • Being based on MMC meant existing controller know-how applied immediately

可以搬走什么

When the barrier is a fragmented standard, the winning move is often for competitors to co-own one open format and make each other's products compatible, rather than each trying to lock the market.

后来呢

SD became the global standard for removable flash. MMC essentially vanished from the small-card market, and Sony's Memory Stick survived mainly inside Sony hardware before being abandoned. In 2023, 5.6 billion SD units shipped, with microSD making up nearly 72% of them, and the market was valued around $17.5 billion that year. The single standard let capacity grow from 8MB to 2TB cards.
