Castile's wool trade depended on transhumance: every autumn hundreds of thousands of sheep walked fixed drove roads (cañadas) from summer pasture in the north down to winter pasture in Extremadura and Andalusia, and back again each spring. The cañadas were wide corridors -- standardized at about ninety varas, roughly 250 feet -- crossing the land of thousands of separate farmers and lords who had no stake in the flocks passing through.
Before 1273, Castile's migratory shepherds organized only in scattered local associations, each too small to defend its own stretch of trail. Because a cañada sat empty and unused for all but a few weeks of the year, any adjoining landowner had every incentive to plough or fence a piece of it during the off-season -- and a single herder's association, present on that stretch only briefly each year, had no practical way to stop him, block by block, mile after mile, across the length of the kingdom.

By 1477 the Mesta's registered flock exceeded 2.69 million sheep; the cañada network it defended survived, formally, into the 1800s. The Mesta remained Castile's dominant pastoral institution for over five centuries and its charter became the reference case economic historians use for corridor-defense-by-consolidation; the same logic recurs wherever a shared linear asset -- a rail right-of-way, an irrigation canal, a pipeline route -- has many independent users none of whom can defend it alone.
